What the Insight S485(2.8mm) is

The TP-Link VIGI InSight S485 is an 8 MP (4K) full-colour turret camera for outdoor use. It records 3840×2160 detail and, unlike infrared-only cameras, can stay in full colour after dark using four built-in white LEDs — so clothing and vehicle colours stay visible, not just black-and-white shapes.

Lens: fixed 2.8 mm (111° wide view); also sold in a 4 mm version for a narrower, longer reach.
Night vision: full colour with the white light (to 30 m) or black-and-white with infrared (to 30 m) — set auto, scheduled, always-on or off.
Audio: built-in microphone and speaker for two-way talk; the mic picks up sound within about 5 m.
Power: PoE (802.3af/at) over one network cable, or a 12 V DC plug-pack.

Built for Australian outdoors with an IP67 metal housing (−30 to 60 °C), 120 dB WDR for bright backlight, H.265+ to save storage, and a microSD slot up to 512 GB (card not included). Active Defense adds a flashing white light and an audible warning to move intruders on. It is ONVIF (Profile S/T/G), so it works with VIGI NVRs and most third-party recorders.

Installation Requirements

1. Power: a PoE (802.3af/at) switch or injector, or a 12 V DC plug-pack. 2. Cabling: one Cat5e/Cat6 run (RJ45) back to your PoE switch or NVR. 3. Recorder: a VIGI NVR for full features, any ONVIF recorder, or a microSD card (up to 512 GB) for standalone recording. 4. Mounting: ceiling or wall; the turret tilts on its base to aim. No IK vandal rating, so mount it out of easy reach in exposed spots.

Does it really stay in full colour at night, or only with the white light on?
It stays in full colour after dark by switching on its four white LEDs, which reach about 30 m. If you would rather not light the area, set it to infrared mode and it records in black and white to roughly the same distance. You pick the behaviour in the VIGI app.
Q.02

Can I stop the white spotlight from staying on all night?
Yes. The illuminator has Auto, Scheduled, Always on and Always off modes, so you can run infrared-only or schedule the white light for set hours instead of lighting the area all night.
Q.03

What power does it need?
One PoE switch or injector (802.3af or 802.3at) powers it and carries video over a single Ethernet cable, drawing up to 12.5 W. If you do not have PoE, run a 12 V DC plug-pack instead (up to 11.5 W).

Will it work with my existing non-TP-Link NVR?
It supports ONVIF (Profile S/T/G), so most current Hikvision, Dahua and other ONVIF recorders can pull its stream. For the full smart features — people and vehicle search, Active Defense and simple setup — pair it with a VIGI NVR or the VIGI app.

Does it record on its own without an NVR?
Yes. A microSD slot takes cards up to 512 GB for onboard recording, so it can run standalone. The card is not included, and a separate NVR or VIGI Cloud is still worth adding for longer retention and central viewing.

What is the difference between the 2.8 mm and 4 mm versions?
The 2.8 mm gives a wider 111° view for general coverage of a yard or shopfront. The 4 mm narrows the view to about 91° but reaches further, so faces and plates stay usable at a longer distance. This listing is the 2.8 mm.

Does it have a microphone and speaker?
Yes. It has a built-in mic and speaker for two-way talk through the app, and the mic picks up sound within about 5 m. There are no external audio or alarm terminals, so it uses the built-in audio only.

Is it tough enough for an exposed wall?
The housing is IP67-rated metal and runs from −30 to 60 °C, so dust and heavy rain are fine. It does not carry an IK vandal rating, so for reachable or higher-risk spots mount it out of easy reach.

You have 30 days from the day you receive your order to request a change-of-mind return. Items must be unopened, factory-sealed and in resalable condition. A 15% restocking fee applies and return postage is at your cost. Faulty or incorrectly supplied items are different: we cover the return shipping and refund or replace at no charge.
