§ 01Overview

What the NVR1004H-4P is

The TP-Link VIGI NVR1004H-4P is a 4-channel PoE+ network video recorder — the compact, lower-cost sibling of the 8-channel NVR1008H.

Its four built-in PoE+ ports connect and power up to four IP cameras over a single cable each, with no separate adapters to wire.

It is plug-and-play with VIGI cameras and records to a SATA hard drive, which is not included (a separate 2 TB version comes with a drive pre-fitted).

Channels / PoE: 4 channels and 4 PoE+ ports (802.3af/at), 53 W total and up to 30 W per port.

Bandwidth: 80 Mbps incoming — enough for four 4 MP cameras at once; mix in 8 MP and you may need to trim their bitrate.

Output / playback: 4K (3840×2160) over HDMI plus simultaneous VGA, with 4-channel synchronous playback.

Storage: one SATA bay for a drive up to 10 TB — the hard drive is not included.

It records H.265+/H.264+ to save space, with smart alarms (motion, line-crossing, intrusion, human and vehicle) driven by the cameras, two-way audio, and remote viewing through the VIGI app, web UI and VIGI Security Manager.

It is ONVIF (Profile S), so it works with most third-party IP cameras, though plug-and-play setup and the full smart features are best with VIGI cameras.

This is an indoor desktop recorder.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the NVR1004H-4P

Q.01

Does it come with a hard drive?

The plain NVR1004H-4P ships without a drive, so you add a SATA surveillance hard drive up to 10 TB. There is also a NVR1004H-4P-2TB version with a 2 TB drive pre-fitted if you would rather not supply your own. A surveillance-rated drive such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk is built for continuous 24/7 recording.
Q.02

How is it different from the 8-channel NVR1008H?

It is the smaller, lower-cost option: four channels and PoE ports instead of eight, a 53 W PoE budget instead of 113 W, and a drive up to 10 TB instead of 16 TB. Choose this for up to four cameras and step up to the NVR1008H if you need more channels or storage.
Q.03

How many cameras can it run?

Four — it has four channels and four PoE+ ports. The 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth is enough for four 4 MP cameras at once; if you use 8 MP cameras you may need to lower their bitrate or frame rate.
Q.04

Will it work with non-VIGI cameras?

It supports ONVIF (Profile S), so most third-party IP cameras can connect and record. Plug-and-play and the full smart features work best with VIGI cameras.
Q.05

Does it power the cameras?

Yes. The four PoE+ ports (802.3af/at) carry data and power on one cable per camera, with a 53 W total budget and up to 30 W per port.
Q.06

Can I view it on my phone?

Yes. The VIGI app for Android and iOS gives remote live view, playback and alerts, and you can also use the web UI or VIGI Security Manager on a computer.
Q.07

Can I run it on a monitor without a computer?

Yes. It includes a USB mouse and has HDMI and VGA outputs, so it works as a standalone recorder on a monitor or TV.
Q.08

How much footage will it hold?

That depends on drive size, resolution, frame rate and how much motion is recorded. Recording on motion or events stretches storage much further than continuous recording. The single bay takes a drive up to 10 TB.

§ 09Bundles

Recommended packages

01

Add a hard drive (required)

It records to a SATA drive that is not included — add a surveillance HDD such as 6 TB or 10 TB (its maximum). A NVR1004H-4P-2TB version with a drive pre-fitted is also available.
