§ 01Overview

What the VIGI NVR1008H-8MP is

The TP-Link VIGI NVR1008H-8MP is an 8-channel PoE+ network video recorder for small CCTV systems.

Its eight built-in PoE+ ports connect and power up to eight IP cameras over a single cable each, so there are no separate adapters to wire.

It is plug-and-play with VIGI cameras and records to a SATA hard drive — the drive is not included.

Channels / PoE: 8 channels and 8 PoE+ ports (802.3af/at), 113 W total and up to 30 W per port.

Bandwidth: 80 Mbps incoming — comfortably records up to eight 4 MP cameras at once; if you run several 8 MP cameras you may need to trim their bitrate.

Output / playback: 4K (3840×2160) over HDMI plus simultaneous VGA, with 8-channel synchronous playback.

Storage: one SATA bay for a drive up to 16 TB — the hard drive is not included.

It records H.265+/H.264+ to save space, with smart alarms (motion, line-crossing, intrusion, human and vehicle) driven by the cameras, two-way audio, and remote viewing through the VIGI app, web UI and VIGI Security Manager.

It is ONVIF (Profile S), so it works with most third-party IP cameras, though plug-and-play setup and the full smart features are best with VIGI cameras.

This is an indoor recorder (−10 to 55 °C).

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the VIGI NVR1008H-8MP

Q.01

Does it come with a hard drive?

No. The NVR ships without a drive, so you add a SATA surveillance hard drive (up to 16 TB) to record. A surveillance-rated drive such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk is built for continuous 24/7 recording and is the safer choice over a standard desktop drive.
Q.02

How many cameras and what resolution can it really handle?

It has eight channels and eight PoE+ ports. The 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth comfortably records up to eight 4 MP cameras at once; if you run several 8 MP cameras you may need to lower their bitrate or frame rate to stay within budget.
Q.03

Will it work with non-VIGI cameras?

It supports ONVIF (Profile S), so most third-party IP cameras can connect and record. Plug-and-play setup, two-way audio and the full smart features work best with VIGI cameras.
Q.04

Does it power the cameras?

Yes. The eight PoE+ ports (802.3af/at) carry data and power on one cable per camera, with a 113 W total budget and up to 30 W per port — enough for typical 4 MP and 8 MP VIGI cameras.
Q.05

How much footage will it store?

That depends on drive size, resolution, frame rate and how much motion is recorded. As a rough guide, one large surveillance drive holds days to weeks of continuous 8-camera footage, and recording on motion or events stretches it much further. The single bay takes a drive up to 16 TB.
Q.06

Can I view it on my phone?

Yes. The VIGI app for Android and iOS gives live view, playback and alerts remotely, and you can also use the web UI or VIGI Security Manager on a computer.
Q.07

Can I run it on a monitor without a computer?

Yes. It includes a USB mouse and has HDMI and VGA outputs, so it works as a standalone recorder on a monitor or TV.
Q.08

Where should it be installed?

It is an indoor recorder rated −10 to 55 °C, so mount it inside in a ventilated spot near the camera cabling and a power point. Keep it cool and dust-free for reliable 24/7 operation.

Recommended packages

01

Add a hard drive (required)

It records to a SATA drive that is not included — add a surveillance HDD such as 6 TB for most jobs, or 10 TB for longer retention.
