The Hikvision DS-2CD2566G2-I is a 6MP outdoor AcuSense mini dome camera for Australian homes and businesses that want sharp detail from a discreet, low-profile housing.

AcuSense gen 2 uses deep-learning algorithms to separate people and vehicles from other movement such as falling leaves, rain or small animals, so the events it flags are the ones worth reviewing.

It records 6MP (3200 x 1800) through a 2.8mm or 4mm fixed lens (tell us your choice in the order comments), with DarkFighter low-light processing and 120dB true WDR to hold detail in high-contrast scenes such as a backlit entry or a shaded carport.

At night an 850nm infrared illuminator reaches up to 30 metres and Smart IR steps the light down on close subjects to prevent a washed-out face.

As an infrared model it produces black-and-white footage in full darkness rather than colour.

The camera is IP67 weatherproof and IK08 impact-rated, and it can be powered over a single network cable using PoE (802.3af) or by 12V DC.

A built-in microSD slot allows on-board recording, and it pairs with Hikvision AcuSense NVRs and the Hik-Connect app for remote viewing.

Power and cabling

Run one Cat5e/6 cable and power it over PoE (802.3af) from a PoE switch or NVR, or use a 12V DC supply where PoE is not available.

Mounting

Fix to a wall, soffit or ceiling at about 2.5-3 m; the three-axis gimbal lets you aim the lens after mounting.

Setup

In Australia a network camera is usually fitted by a licensed security installer or a competent IT/cabling technician, who runs the Cat5e/6 cable, terminates the RJ45, mounts the camera and adds it to the NVR or app. Add it in Hik-Connect or your NVR, then set human/vehicle detection zones and IR night mode.

For a wide view of an entry, porch or tight area choose 2.8mm (about 105 degrees). For more reach down a driveway or path the 4mm gives a narrower but longer view. Note your choice in the order comments.

It supports PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Class 3, max 7W), so a standard PoE switch or NVR port runs both power and data over one cable. It also accepts 12V DC if PoE is not available.

Will it record in colour at night?
No. This is an infrared model, so in full darkness it records in black and white using the 30m IR illuminator. For 24/7 colour at night, look at a ColorVu model such as the DS-2CD2T67G2H instead.

Does it have an IK vandal rating?
Yes, it is IK08 impact-rated and IP67 weatherproof. That suits most outdoor and semi-exposed mounting, though it is not a high-impact IK10 dome for the most exposed public areas.

Will it work with my existing Hikvision NVR?
Yes, it works with Hikvision AcuSense NVRs over ISAPI or ONVIF. Keep the NVR firmware current so it recognises the human and vehicle smart-event types.

Can it record without an NVR?
Yes. The on-board microSD slot supports a card up to 256GB for standalone edge recording, and it also supports NAS storage and ANR network-loss buffering.

Does it have a microphone?
Yes, it has a built-in microphone for audio capture. It does not have a speaker, so it is not a two-way audio camera. Check your state's surveillance and listening-device rules before recording audio.

Is it suitable for coastal Australian sites?
It is IP67-rated for dust and water, but Hikvision lists no specific anti-corrosion coating on this model, so direct shoreline or highly corrosive sites are best served by an anti-corrosion-rated camera.
