§ 01Overview

What the HDD-2TB-DVR is

This 2TB surveillance hard drive is built for the one job a CCTV recorder demands: writing video continuously, all day every day. It is supplied as either a WD Purple or a Seagate SkyHawk drive depending on stock at the time of order, and both are purpose-built surveillance ranges that are equivalent for recorder use, so you get a 24/7-rated drive either way. These drives use surveillance-tuned firmware - WD Purple's AllFrame and Seagate SkyHawk's ImagePerfect - to reduce dropped frames across multiple camera streams, and both support up to 64 HD cameras with a 180TB/year workload rating and around 1 million hours MTBF.

As a capacity guide, 2TB stores roughly 30 days of continuous recording from four 1080p cameras using H.265 compression; higher resolution, higher frame rates or more cameras shorten that, while motion-only recording extends it. A 4K system uses far more, so step up to a larger drive if you record in 4K. The drive is a standard 3.5-inch SATA unit that installs inside the recorder, and it is tested for use with Hikvision, Dahua, HiLook and many other DVR and NVR brands.

The key point is that surveillance drives are not the same as the desktop hard drives sold for PCs. Desktop drives are designed for intermittent use and tend to fail early under the constant write load of CCTV, whereas these drives are engineered for always-on recording and carry a 3-year warranty. Order the drive together with your recorder and it can be installed and formatted before dispatch, so the system arrives ready to record. Before fitting, simply confirm your recorder supports a 2TB drive, which almost all do.

§ 05Where it fits

Right at home in these scenarios

Adding storage to a new recorder

Fit a 24/7-rated drive when buying a DVR or NVR so it can record from day one.

Replacing a failed desktop drive

Swap an unsuitable desktop drive that has worn out under continuous CCTV recording.

Small 1080p systems

Store around a month of continuous footage from a four-camera 1080p setup.

Motion-based recording

Extend retention well beyond a month on systems that record on motion rather than continuously.

§ 06Setup

Installation & setup

01

Check capacity support

Confirm your DVR or NVR supports a 2TB drive (almost all do) before fitting, and note its maximum supported size.

02

Power down first

Switch off and unplug the recorder before opening it to fit the drive, to protect both the drive and the unit.

03

Fit and connect

Mount the 3.5-inch drive in the recorder's bay and connect the SATA data and power leads securely.

04

Initialise and format

Power up, then initialise and format the drive in the recorder's storage menu so it is ready to record.

§ 08Questions

Frequently asked about the HDD-2TB-DVR

Q.01

How long will a 2TB drive record for?

As a guide, about 30 days of continuous recording from four 1080p cameras using H.265. More cameras, higher resolution or higher frame rates shorten this, while motion-only recording extends it. A 4K system needs a much larger drive.
Q.02

Is this WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk?

It is supplied as one or the other depending on current stock. Both are purpose-built surveillance drives and are equivalent for DVR and NVR recording, so either is a reliable choice for your recorder.
Q.03

Why not just use a normal desktop hard drive?

Desktop drives are built for intermittent use and tend to fail early under the constant 24/7 write load of CCTV. Surveillance drives use firmware and build quality designed for always-on recording, which is why they are recommended.
Q.04

Will it work with my recorder?

It is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive tested for Hikvision, Dahua, HiLook and many other DVR and NVR brands. Almost all recorders support a 2TB drive; just confirm your model's maximum supported capacity if unsure.
Q.05

Can you install and format it for me?

Yes. If you order the drive together with your DVR or NVR, it can be installed and formatted before dispatch so the system arrives ready to record straight away.
Q.06

How many cameras can it support?

Both WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk surveillance drives support up to 64 HD cameras. The 2TB capacity is the limit on recording days, not the number of cameras the drive can handle.
Q.07

What warranty does it come with?

The drive carries a 3-year warranty. Surveillance drives are rated for around 1 million hours MTBF and a 180TB/year workload for continuous recording duty.
Q.08

Should I choose a larger drive?

If you record in 4K, use many cameras, or want longer retention, a larger drive such as 6TB, 8TB or 10TB stores more days. 2TB suits smaller 1080p systems or motion-based recording.
