The Dahua DH-SD8A840-HNF-PA is an 8MP 4K Starlight PTZ camera designed for long-distance surveillance where a fixed camera cannot reach.

Its 40x optical zoom (5.6-223mm) pulls in distant detail, and on the DORI scale it can identify a person at roughly 440 metres, observe activity much further out, and use up to 500 metres of infrared after dark.

A 1/1.8" STARVIS sensor with Starlight tuning keeps colour images usable down to about 0.005 lux.

Because this is a WizMind camera, it does more than zoom.

Auto-tracking pans, tilts and zooms to follow a moving target once a rule is triggered, while video metadata extracts attributes of faces, people, vehicles and number plates for later search on a compatible Dahua WizMind NVR or IVSS.

Perimeter protection (tripwire, intrusion, loitering) filters animals and moving foliage so operators react to real events.

A smart wiper with rain sensor keeps the dome clear in wet weather.

This is a heavy professional unit (about 10kg) that needs proper power.

It runs on Hi-PoE or a 36V DC supply, so a standard 802.3af/at NVR PoE port will not drive it; budget for a Hi-PoE injector or the Dahua power adapter, plus a wall, pole or corner bracket rated for the weight.

Plan power first

This PTZ needs Hi-PoE or a 36V DC supply, so fit a Hi-PoE injector or the Dahua power adapter; a standard NVR PoE port will not run it.

Mount for the weight

Use a wall, pole or corner bracket rated for about 10kg at a height that gives a clear long-range line of sight.

Cable and record

Run Cat5e/6 back to the network and record on a Dahua WizMind NVR such as the NVR5208-8P or NVR5216-16P so metadata search and auto-tracking rules are available.

Commission

In Australia a network camera is usually fitted by a licensed security installer or a competent IT/cabling technician who runs the Cat5e/6 cable, terminates the RJ45, mounts the unit and adds it to the NVR or app. Set patrol presets, tracking rules and perimeter lines, then confirm Hi-PoE/36V power under full IR and PTZ load.

Do I need a special NVR for the AI features?
Face and vehicle metadata search work best with a Dahua WizMind AI NVR or an IVSS. The camera still records on any ONVIF recorder, but you lose the metadata search.

Yes. It is IP67-rated with a metal housing, 6kV surge protection and a -40 to +70 degree range. Keep it back from direct salt spray and service the wiper as needed.
