§ 01Overview

What the VIGI NVR2016H-16P is

The TP-Link VIGI NVR2016H-16P is a 16-channel PoE+ network video recorder aimed at small businesses — groceries, warehouses, restaurants and offices — that want to run up to sixteen IP cameras from one tidy box.

Its standout feature is the sixteen built-in PoE+ ports: each VIGI camera connects and draws power over a single Ethernet cable straight into the recorder, with up to 30 W available per port, so there is no separate PoE switch or injector to buy and wire.

On the recording side it handles cameras up to 8MP (4K) and uses H.265+ compression to stretch storage and bandwidth a long way without losing detail.

It outputs 4K over HDMI and can drive a second screen over VGA, either showing the same view or working independently so one screen runs live view while the other handles playback or configuration.

ONVIF Profile S/T support means it also works with many third-party cameras, and the VIGI app, Security Manager and web interface give you remote live view, playback and alerts from a phone or computer.

Storage is two SATA bays, each taking a surveillance-grade hard drive of up to 16TB, for up to 32TB total and weeks of 24/7 footage from a full set of cameras.

The drive is not included — fit WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk surveillance drives sized to your camera count, resolution and how long you need to keep recordings; a desktop or SSD drive is not recommended for continuous recording.

Smart events such as intrusion and are driven by the connected VIGI cameras and surfaced and recorded by the NVR.

It is genuine stock with a local 3-year warranty and support.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the VIGI NVR2016H-16P

Q.01

Does this NVR come with a hard drive?

No. The NVR2016H-16P is supplied without a hard drive. It has two SATA bays that each take a surveillance-grade drive of up to 16TB, for up to 32TB total. Fit a WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk drive sized to your camera count and how long you want to keep footage.
Q.02

Do I need a separate PoE switch for the cameras?

No. This recorder has sixteen built-in PoE+ ports, so each VIGI camera is powered and connected over a single network cable straight to the NVR. That is the main advantage of this model over the non-PoE NVR4032H and NVR4064H, which do need an external PoE switch.
Q.03

How many cameras and what resolution does it support?

It records up to sixteen channels and supports cameras up to 8MP (4K). H.265+ compression keeps the storage and bandwidth needed for sixteen high-resolution streams manageable, and you can mix camera resolutions across the channels.
Q.04

What hard drive should I use, and how big?

Use surveillance-grade 3.5-inch drives such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk, which are built for 24/7 recording. Size depends on cameras and retention: as a guide, sixteen 4MP cameras recording continuously fill storage quickly, so many sites fit two large drives toward the 32TB maximum.
Q.05

Can I view it remotely and use third-party cameras?

Yes. The VIGI app, Security Manager and web interface give remote live view, playback and alerts. The NVR supports ONVIF Profile S/T, so alongside VIGI cameras it works with many ONVIF-compliant third-party cameras.
Q.06

Does it support two monitors at once?

Yes. It outputs 4K over HDMI and also has a VGA output. The two can run independently, so one screen can show live view while the other handles playback or configuration, or they can mirror the same view.
Q.07

Is this recorder NDAA compliant?

Yes. TP-Link VIGI is NDAA compliant, which suits government, education and other sites with approved-hardware requirements. The recorder is genuine stock supplied with a local 3-year warranty and support.
