§ 01Overview

What the DHI-NVR4208-8P-AI/ANZ is

The Dahua DHI-NVR4208-8P-AI/ANZ is an 8-channel WizSense network video recorder built for a typical home or small business system. Eight built-in PoE ports (IEEE 802.3af/at) power and connect up to eight IP cameras over a single network cable each, so there is no separate PoE switch or camera power supply to wire. It records cameras up to 16MP and uses Smart H.265+ compression to stretch storage further without losing the detail you need for review.

On the AI side this is an NVR4 series recorder, so its smart search is Quick Pick rather than AcuPick: paired with compatible cameras it lets you filter recorded footage down to human and vehicle targets quickly. AI by recorder covers one channel of face detection and recognition, two channels of perimeter protection and four channels of SMD Plus, while more advanced analytics such as ANPR run on capable cameras. It accepts third-party ONVIF cameras alongside Dahua, and the free DMSS app gives live view, playback and push notifications on your phone.

The recorder has two SATA bays for up to 16TB per drive. A hard drive is not included, so add a surveillance-grade drive sized for how many cameras you run and how long you want to keep footage. Two bays let you fit more capacity or split recording across drives as the system grows.

§ 04Why choose this

Built for the way you actually use the DHI-NVR4208-8P-AI/ANZ

Eight cameras, no extra switch

Eight built-in PoE ports power and connect up to eight cameras on one cable each, so a standard system needs no separate PoE switch.

Records up to 16MP

Supports current 4MP to 8MP cameras with Smart H.265+ compression, keeping high-resolution footage efficient on storage.

Smart human and vehicle search

Quick Pick and SMD Plus let you filter recordings to people and vehicles fast, so reviewing an event takes minutes not hours.

Flexible storage

Two SATA bays take up to 16TB per drive, so you can size capacity to your retention needs and expand later (drive supplied separately).

§ 05Where it fits

Right at home in these scenarios

Family homes

Records the entries, driveway and perimeter of a house on up to eight cameras, with people and vehicle filtering for cleaner overnight alerts.

Small shops and offices

Covers the entry, floor, till and storeroom of a small premises, with phone access for the owner via the DMSS app.

Workshops and sheds

Keeps an eye on tools, gates and yard areas, recording up to eight cameras with Quick Pick search for fast incident review.

Upgrades from analogue

A straightforward step up to IP for a property moving off older analogue cameras, with single-cable PoE and remote viewing.

§ 06Setup

Installation & setup

01

Fit a surveillance hard drive

A drive is not included, so fit a surveillance-grade SATA drive (up to 16TB per bay) before recording, sized for your camera count and retention.

02

Connect cameras to the PoE ports

Run one network cable from each camera to the recorder's built-in PoE ports for power and data, keeping each run within roughly 100m.

03

Connect to your network

Plug the recorder's LAN port into your router so it can reach the internet for remote viewing and time sync, then set recording schedules.

04

Set up the DMSS app

Add the NVR to the free DMSS app to view live and recorded footage and receive push notifications, then tune SMD and Quick Pick settings to your site.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the DHI-NVR4208-8P-AI/ANZ

Q.01

Does this NVR come with a hard drive?

No. The NVR4208-8P is supplied without a hard drive so you can choose the capacity that suits your system. It has two SATA bays that take up to 16TB per drive, and we recommend a surveillance-grade drive built for continuous 24/7 recording. Size the drive to your camera count, resolution and how many days of footage you want to keep.
Q.02

How many cameras can I connect?

It records up to eight channels and has eight built-in PoE ports, so you can connect up to eight IP cameras directly, each on a single network cable for both power and data. You do not need a separate PoE switch for a standard eight-camera system, which keeps the install simpler and tidier.
Q.03

Does it support AcuPick?

No. This is an NVR4 series recorder, so its smart search feature is Quick Pick, not AcuPick. Quick Pick still lets you filter recorded footage to human and vehicle targets quickly with compatible cameras. If you specifically need AcuPick search, step up to a Dahua NVR5 series recorder such as the NVR5208-8P-AI/ANZ.
Q.04

What AI features does it have?

AI by recorder covers one channel of face detection and recognition, two channels of perimeter protection and four channels of SMD Plus, which classifies movement as people or vehicles to cut false alerts. More advanced analytics such as ANPR and people counting run on capable AI cameras rather than the recorder itself.
Q.05

Can I use non-Dahua cameras with it?

Yes. The recorder supports third-party cameras over ONVIF as well as Dahua IP cameras. AI features depend on the camera, so for full smart detection and Quick Pick search, pair it with compatible Dahua WizSense cameras. Mixed-brand setups still record, but advanced analytics may be limited on third-party models.
Q.06

What resolution cameras can it record?

It records IP cameras up to 16MP, so it handles current 4MP, 6MP and 8MP (4K) Dahua cameras with headroom. Smart H.265+ compression keeps high-resolution recording efficient, so you get the detail of higher-megapixel cameras without filling storage as quickly as older H.264 recording would.
Q.07

Can I view it on my phone?

Yes. Add the recorder to the free Dahua DMSS app on iOS or Android for live view, playback and push notifications from anywhere with an internet connection. Connect the NVR to your router so it can reach the internet, and you can check cameras and receive alerts while you are away.
Q.08

How are the cameras powered and how far can they run?

Each camera runs on a single Cat network cable from the recorder's built-in PoE ports, carrying both power and data up to roughly 100m per run. This removes the need for a power supply at each camera. For longer runs, use an ePoE-capable recorder or add a switch or extender on that line.
