What the DS1101I is

The Bosch DS1101i is for the window a burglar goes through instead of the door they would have to force. It uses microprocessor-based sound analysis technology, which listens for the specific frequency, signature and timing relationships that breaking glass produces, and covers plate, tempered, laminated and wired glass.

Coverage is 7.6 m to the farthest point of the glass being protected, for panes larger than 30.5 cm square. That is a distance, not a room size: a detector on the ceiling of a lounge can cover several windows if all of them sit inside that radius, while a long room with glass at both ends needs two.

Commissioning is where these detectors are usually got wrong, and this one has the tools for it. A magnet-operated test mode verifies the location and operation with the optional DS1110i tester, and the same mode runs an environmental test that flags ambient noise likely to cause false alarms. Bosch asks that every location be pre-tested with that tester, and the reason is exactly this: coverage depends on room acoustics and window size.

Day to day, the owner gets a check of their own. The automatic sound check lets them clap their hands to confirm the detector is powered and working, and the externally visible alarm LED shows an alarm or test condition and can be programmed to latch so a night-time event is still visible in the morning.

Wiring is conventional: a Form C reed relay rated 3.5 W, 125 mA at 28 VDC for resistive loads, and a separate normally-closed cover tamper on its own terminals. It draws 23 mA at 12 VDC from a 6 VDC to 15 VDC supply, measures 2.1 cm high by 8.6 cm across in a high-impact ABS enclosure, and is rated -29°C to +49°C. One thing to be clear about: a glass break detector is not a complete system and does not detect movement. It is intended only as a component of perimeter protection and should always be used together with motion sensors.

Installation & setup

  1. Before you start

    Unpack the Bosch DS1101i and check the carton against the delivery note. The DS1110i tester, the cable and the end-of-line resistors are separate items, so have them on site: the tester in particular is needed to prove the position.

  2. Where to mount it

    Fit it on the ceiling, or on the wall opposite or adjacent to the window, within 7.6 m of the farthest point of the glass being protected. Coverage depends on room acoustics and window size, so treat that figure as a maximum rather than a guarantee.

  3. Pre-test the position

    Bosch asks that every location be pre-tested with the DS1110i glass break tester. Use the magnet-operated test mode, which verifies location and operation and also runs an environmental test that flags ambient noise likely to cause false alarms.

  4. Cabling

    Run one cable from the panel carrying the 6 VDC to 15 VDC supply, the Form C alarm relay and the normally-closed tamper on its separate terminals. Fit the end-of-line resistors the panel requires, and on a Solution 6000 note that a shorted zone loop reads as a tamper under every end-of-line configuration.

  5. Power

    The detector draws 23 mA at 12 VDC. Check that figure against the detector supply budget of the panel being used.

  6. Handover

    Show the owner the automatic sound check, which responds to a hand clap and confirms the detector is powered and working. Decide with them whether the alarm LED should latch, so an overnight alarm is still visible in the morning.
