§ 01Overview

What the DHI-ARD1731-W2 is

The Dahua DHI-ARD1731-W2 is a wireless PIR motion detector with a built-in camera, designed as part of the Dahua AirShield wireless alarm system.

It does the job of a normal PIR sensor, detecting movement indoors, but adds visual verification: on a trigger it captures a burst of HD snapshots and sends them to your alarm hub and the mobile app, so you can see what set the alarm off rather than guessing.

When movement is detected, the detector sends up to six images at up to 1600 by 1200 to the hub in about ten seconds, using Dahua's RF-HD 2.4 GHz image link, while alarm and control signalling run on a separate sub-GHz RF channel for range and reliability.

The wireless link is two-way and AES128 encrypted with frequency hopping, and a tamper alarm flags any attempt to open or remove the unit.

Its PIR covers up to 12 m and 88 degrees horizontally at a 2.2 m mounting height, with three sensitivity levels and pet immunity for animals up to 18 kg to keep false alarms down.

In the dark it uses a short-range infrared illuminator so the snapshots are still usable.

It is battery powered by three CR123A cells with a typical life of around four years, so there is no cabling to run, and it wall-mounts in minutes.

This makes it a clean retrofit for adding camera-verified motion detection to a room, hallway or entry without pulling cables.

Two things to be clear about: this is an indoor device (PC and ABS housing, rated for indoor temperatures), so it is not for exposed outdoor positions, and it captures still snapshots with no audio, so it does not offer two-way talk.

It is also not a standalone product; it reports to a Dahua AirShield wireless alarm hub, which you need in the system for it to work.

§ 04Why choose this

Built for the way you actually use the DHI-ARD1731-W2

See what triggered the alarm

The built-in camera turns a motion alarm into visual evidence: a burst of HD snapshots lets you confirm a real intruder versus a false trigger from your phone before you act.

Fast, secure wireless

Up to six images reach the hub in about ten seconds over an AES128-encrypted, frequency-hopping link, so verification is quick and the connection stays stable and private.

Fewer false alarms

Pet immunity to 18 kg and three sensitivity levels keep everyday household movement from setting it off, so the alerts you do get are worth checking.

Easy wireless retrofit

Battery power and wall mounting mean no cabling, with around four years of battery life, so it adds camera-verified detection to any room in minutes.

§ 05Where it fits

Right at home in these scenarios

Living areas and hallways

Cover the main path through a home with motion detection that shows you who is there, not just that something moved.

Entries and access points

Verify activity at internal doors and entries with a snapshot burst the moment movement is detected.

Homes with pets

Pet immunity to 18 kg lets you arm interior zones while a cat or small dog roams, without constant false alarms.

Retrofit and rental sites

Wireless and battery powered, it adds verified detection to offices, shops or rentals where running cable is not practical.

§ 06Setup

Installation & setup

01

What's in the box

The DHI-ARD1731-W2 wireless PIR camera detector with its wall-mount bracket and fixings and three CR123A batteries (confirm battery inclusion at purchase). A Dahua AirShield wireless alarm hub is required and sold separately.

02

Installation requirements

First add the detector to a Dahua AirShield wireless alarm hub and confirm a good signal from the mounting spot. Wall-mount it indoors at about 2.2 m high, angled to cover the path movement would take and away from windows, heaters and air vents that can cause false triggers. Set the sensitivity level to suit the room, then test detection and image delivery to the app before arming.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the DHI-ARD1731-W2

Q.01

How is the ARD1731-W2 different from a normal PIR sensor?

It detects movement like any PIR, but it also has a built-in camera. On a trigger it sends a burst of HD snapshots to your hub and phone, so you can see what caused the alarm and decide whether it is a genuine intruder or a false trigger before responding. A plain PIR only tells you that something moved, not what.
Q.02

Does it need a Dahua alarm hub to work?

Yes. The ARD1731-W2 is a detector within the Dahua AirShield wireless alarm system, not a standalone camera. It reports to a Dahua AirShield wireless alarm hub, which receives its snapshots and pushes them to the mobile app, so you need a compatible hub in the system for it to function.
Q.03

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It is an indoor device with a PC and ABS housing rated for indoor temperatures, so it should be mounted inside, such as in a hallway, living area or entry. For outdoor detection use an outdoor-rated detector or an outdoor surveillance camera instead.
Q.04

Will it ignore my pets?

It has pet immunity for animals up to about 18 kg, plus three sensitivity levels, so a cat or small to medium dog moving through the room should not normally set it off. Mount it at the recommended height of about 2.2 m and aim it so pets are low in the field of view for the best results.
Q.05

How does it send images and is the connection secure?

It sends up to six HD images in about ten seconds over Dahua's RF-HD 2.4 GHz image link, while alarm signalling runs on a separate sub-GHz RF channel. The wireless link is two-way and AES128 encrypted with frequency hopping, which keeps the connection stable and protected against interception.
Q.06

Does it record video or have two-way audio?

It captures still HD snapshots on a trigger, not continuous video, and it has no microphone or speaker, so there is no two-way audio. Its purpose is fast visual verification of an alarm event, working alongside your hub and any surveillance cameras.
Q.07

How is it powered and how long do the batteries last?

It is powered by three CR123A lithium batteries with a typical life of around four years under normal use, and it reports a low-battery warning before they run flat. Because it is wireless and battery powered, there is no cabling to run, which makes it a quick retrofit.
Q.08

How far can it detect movement?

Its PIR covers up to 12 m with an 88 degree horizontal spread when mounted at about 2.2 m, which suits a typical room, hallway or entry. Position it to cover the path an intruder would take rather than pointing it at windows or heat sources.

01

Start with the alarm hub

The ARD1731-W2 needs a Dahua AirShield wireless hub to work; pair it with the DHI-ARC3800H-FW2 wireless alarm hub, which receives its snapshots and pushes alerts to the app.
