§ 01Overview

What the DHI-NVR608R-64-4KS2 is

The Dahua DHI-NVR608R-64-4KS2 is a 64-channel 2U Ultra-series network video recorder built as a high-capacity recording workhorse.

An Intel quad-core processor drives 384 Mbps of record bandwidth across up to 64 cameras at resolutions up to 12MP with H.265 compression.

Eight hot-swappable SATA III bays take up to 8TB per drive and support RAID 0/1/5/10 with a global hot-spare, so recordings survive a drive failure and you can replace a drive without downtime.

A redundant power supply means a single power module can fail without stopping recording, which is the key reason to choose the R model over the 608H.

This is a 4KS2 Ultra-series recorder focused on reliable, large-scale recording and playback rather than heavy on-recorder AI.

It handles motion detection, video loss and tampering, basic IVS and event triggers, but it does not run the SMD Plus, face recognition or AcuPick analytics found on the newer WizSense and WizMind AI recorders.

Smart detection on this system comes from the cameras, so pair it with capable Dahua AI cameras if you need people and vehicle classification, and the recorder stores and plays back those streams reliably.

There is no built-in PoE, so cameras connect over the network through external PoE switches sized to your load, which is standard at this channel count.

Two RJ-45 gigabit ports can run bonded or independently, and dual HDMI plus VGA outputs drive control-room monitors.

A hard drive is not included; fit surveillance-grade drives across the eight bays for your retention needs.

§ 04Why choose this

Built for the way you actually use the DHI-NVR608R-64-4KS2

High-availability recording

A redundant power supply plus RAID and hot-swap bays keep a 64-channel system recording through a power or drive fault.

Large channel capacity

Sixty-four channels up to 12MP with 384 Mbps record bandwidth suit big multi-camera sites on one recorder.

Resilient storage

Eight hot-swap SATA III bays with RAID 0/1/5/10 and a global hot-spare protect recordings and rebuild automatically.

Reliable recording platform

An Ultra-series workhorse focused on dependable recording and playback, with smart analytics handled by the cameras.

§ 05Where it fits

Right at home in these scenarios

Large estates and campuses

Records up to 64 cameras across many buildings, with redundant power and RAID protecting footage on critical sites.

Industrial and logistics

Covers extensive yards, loading areas and perimeters where a high channel count and reliable recording matter most.

High-availability sites

Suits facilities that cannot afford recording downtime, thanks to the redundant power supply and RAID storage.

Existing AI-camera fleets

Stores and plays back streams from Dahua AI cameras that do the people and vehicle detection at the edge.

§ 06Setup

Installation & setup

01

Rack-mount with redundant power

Install the 2U recorder in a comms rack and connect both power inputs so the redundant supply provides failover; allow airflow and front access for drives.

02

Provide external PoE switching

This recorder has no built-in PoE, so connect cameras through external PoE switches sized to your camera count and power budget.

03

Fit drives and configure RAID

Fit surveillance-grade SATA III drives across the eight bays (not included), set the RAID level and assign a global hot-spare for automatic rebuild.

04

Add AI cameras for detection

For people and vehicle classification, use Dahua AI cameras that run analytics on the camera, then record and play those streams on the NVR.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the DHI-NVR608R-64-4KS2

Q.01

Does this recorder have built-in PoE?

No. The NVR608R-64 does not have built-in PoE. With 64 channels, cameras connect over the network through external PoE switches that you size to your camera count and power budget. This also lets you place switches near camera clusters across a large site and feed them all back to the one recorder.
Q.02

Is a hard drive included?

No. It is supplied without drives. It has eight hot-swappable SATA III bays taking up to 8TB each, and for 64 channels you will typically fit several surveillance-grade drives. With RAID you can keep recording through a drive failure, and the global hot-spare can rebuild automatically onto a spare drive.
Q.03

What is the difference between the 608R and 608H?

The 608R includes a redundant power supply for high availability, so recording continues if one power module fails. The 608H uses a single power supply. The R model suits sites where downtime is not acceptable; otherwise both share the 64/32-channel Ultra platform with RAID and hot-swap bays depending on model.
Q.04

Does this recorder do people and vehicle detection itself?

Not on the recorder. This is a 4KS2 Ultra-series recorder focused on reliable recording and playback, with motion detection, video loss, tampering and basic IVS. It does not run SMD Plus, face recognition or AcuPick on the recorder. For people and vehicle classification, use Dahua AI cameras that run those analytics on the camera.
Q.05

What RAID levels does it support?

It supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 with a global hot-spare. RAID 5 is common for surveillance because it balances usable capacity with the ability to survive a single drive failure, and the hot-spare drive can take over and rebuild automatically. The hot-swap bays let you replace a failed drive without shutting the recorder down.
Q.06

How many cameras and what resolution can it record?

It records up to 64 channels at resolutions up to 12MP with H.265 compression and 384 Mbps of record bandwidth. That suits a large multi-camera site; spread high-resolution cameras across the bandwidth budget and use H.265 to keep storage efficient at this channel count.
Q.07

Can it use third-party cameras?

Yes. It supports ONVIF and a wide range of third-party brands as well as Dahua. Recording and playback work across brands. Because the recorder itself is not running modern AI analytics, the camera you choose determines smart features, so match cameras to the detection you need.
Q.08

Is this suitable for a small system?

No. It is a 64-channel enterprise recorder for large sites that need high channel counts, RAID storage and redundant power. For a home or small business, a WizSense recorder with built-in PoE such as an 8 or 16-channel model is far more practical and cost-effective.
