About All Network Video Recorders

A Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the central recording unit for an IP camera system — it receives, stores, and manages footage from PoE cameras over Ethernet. Modern NVRs include built-in PoE switches (one cable per camera carries both power and video), H.265+ compression for efficient storage, and AI-powered smart search to filter playback by human or vehicle target type.

Smarket stocks NVRs from four brands. Match the NVR brand to the camera brand for full AI feature compatibility — ONVIF allows basic interop but advanced features (AcuSense smart search, WizSense classification, TiOC control) require brand-matched setups. Channel counts: 4 (1-4 cameras), 8 (5-8 cameras), 16 (9-16 cameras), 32 (commercial).

Browse by brand: Hikvision NVRs (M-Series & I-Series, AcuSense smart search), Dahua NVRs (WizSense AI, required for TiOC control), HiLook NVRs (budget-tier within Hikvision ecosystem), TP-Link VIGI NVRs (zero subscription, networking-brand reliability).

What's Included in All Network Video Recorders

NVRs available by brand:

Hikvision NVRs — M-Series and I-Series in 4CH, 8CH, 16CH, 32CH. AcuSense smart search.
Dahua NVRs — 4CH to 32CH with WizSense AI and AI Coding storage. Required for TiOC control.
HiLook NVRs — budget tier within the Hikvision ecosystem, 4CH to 16CH.
TP-Link VIGI NVRs — networking-brand reliability, zero subscription, ONVIF open standard.

All NVRs include built-in PoE switches matched to channel count, H.265+ compression, free mobile app remote access, and 3-year Australian warranty. Pair with a surveillance-grade hard drive (WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk, 4TB minimum for 4 cameras at 6MP).

Comparing All Network Video Recorders Models

NVR Brand Comparison

Hikvision NVR — most established AU ecosystem. AcuSense smart search across all channels. Works fully with HiLook cameras. Best installer support network. Choose when you have or plan Hikvision/HiLook cameras.

Dahua NVR — required for full TiOC active deterrence control (siren, strobe, voice). WizSense AI smart search. AI Coding for storage savings. DMSS app. Choose when you have Dahua cameras, especially TiOC variants.

HiLook NVR — budget tier within Hikvision ecosystem. Same Hik-Connect app, fully compatible with Hikvision cameras. Streamlined feature set keeps cost down. Choose when budget matters and you want the Hikvision ecosystem at lower entry price.

TP-Link VIGI NVR — different ecosystem from Hikvision/Dahua. Networking-brand reliability, zero subscription, ONVIF open standard, free VIGI app. Choose when already a TP-Link customer or wanting independent ecosystem.

Common Questions about All Network Video Recorders

What is an NVR and do I need one for my IP cameras?

An NVR (Network Video Recorder) is the central unit that records, stores, and manages footage from your IP cameras. Every PoE IP camera system requires an NVR — cameras themselves only stream and detect; the NVR provides recording, storage, search, and the central management interface. Smartphones and computers connect to the NVR (not directly to cameras) for remote viewing.

How many channels do I need?

Match channel count to camera count plus expansion room. 4-channel NVR for 1-4 cameras, 8-channel for 5-8 cameras, 16-channel for 9-16 cameras. Smarket recommends choosing one size up — buying an 8-channel NVR for a 4-camera install gives you 4 spare PoE ports for future expansion without replacing the NVR.

What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?

NVRs use IP cameras connected via Ethernet (one cable carries power and data via PoE). DVRs use older analogue cameras connected via coaxial cable with separate power supplies. NVRs offer higher resolution (up to 8MP 4K), built-in AI features, easier installation, and remote app access. New installations should always use NVR + IP cameras unless you're integrating with an existing analogue system.

How much hard drive storage do I need?

A 4TB surveillance-grade hard drive holds approximately 30 days of continuous recording from 4 cameras at 6MP with H.265+ compression. For 8 cameras, choose 6TB to 8TB. For 4K cameras, expect roughly 33% more storage usage than 6MP. Motion-only recording typically extends duration 3-5x. Always use surveillance-grade drives such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk.

Can I mix camera brands on one NVR?

ONVIF protocol allows basic compatibility between brands (live view, basic recording), but advanced features such as AcuSense smart search, WizSense classification, and TiOC active deterrence control require brand-matched cameras and NVRs. Hikvision NVRs work fully with HiLook cameras (same ecosystem). Smarket recommends matching brands within a single system for full feature support.

Before you buy

What customers ask most before ordering from this range — and how we deliver.

See all FAQs →

How much storage do I need?

As a rule of thumb, four 8MP cameras recording 24/7 with H.265+ use about 2TB for 2 weeks of footage; switch to motion-only recording and that stretches to 4–6 weeks. Our kits ship with a 2TB, 4TB or 6TB surveillance drive and you can upgrade the drive on the kit page before checkout. Tell us how many days you need to keep and we'll recommend the size.

Can I mix different cameras on one NVR, or add more later?

Yes. You can mix 6MP and 8MP, or ColorVu and AcuSense, on the same NVR as long as the total bandwidth stays within the NVR's rating (we check this for every kit we sell). To add cameras later, just plug them into a spare PoE port on the NVR — no reconfiguration needed. This is why we suggest an 8-channel NVR even if you start with 4 cameras.

How long does delivery take?

Order before 2pm (Sydney time) on a business day and in-stock items are dispatched the same day. Metro delivery usually takes 2–4 business days. Regional areas may take longer. You'll receive a tracking number by email as soon as your order leaves the warehouse.

How much is shipping?

Standard shipping is free on all orders over $300 AUD, Australia-wide. Orders under $300 ship at a flat rate of $25, calculated at checkout. Tracking is included on every order.

What warranty do you offer?

All cameras, NVRs and DVRs come with a 3-year back-to-base manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Hard drives and accessories are covered as set out in our Warranty Policy.

What is your return policy?

You have 30 days from the day you receive your order to request a change-of-mind return. Items must be unopened, factory-sealed and in resalable condition. A 15% restocking fee applies and return postage is at your cost. Faulty or incorrectly supplied items are different: we cover the return shipping and refund or replace at no charge. Read the full Return & Refund Policy.

Is your Hikvision, Dahua, HiLook and TP-Link VIGI stock genuine Australian stock?

Yes, 100%. Every Hikvision, Dahua, HiLook and TP-Link VIGI product we sell is a genuine Australian-market model sourced through Australian supply chains — never grey imports. That means factory-sealed units, Australian-region firmware that works with the official apps out of the box, and a full 3-year local warranty.
