§ 01Overview

What the VIGI C540-4G is

The TP-Link VIGI C540-4G is a 4 MP outdoor full-colour camera that connects over the 4G mobile network instead of a fixed line — drop in a Nano-SIM and it works at sites with no internet or network cabling.

A motorised pan-and-tilt head lets you cover a wide area or swing to a point of interest from your phone, and it can run on a VIGI solar kit for fully off-grid spots.

Connection: 4G LTE over a Nano-SIM (Cat 4); no fixed internet or network cable needed at the camera — the SIM and data plan are not included.

Movement: motorised pan 348° and tilt 120°, with 300 presets and patrol scan controlled from the VIGI app.

Lens / night vision: fixed 4 mm (80° view); full colour with the white light (to 30 m) or black-and-white infrared (to 30 m) — set auto, scheduled, on or off.

Power: 12 V DC (adapter included) or a VIGI solar kit — there is no PoE.

It records to a microSD card up to 512 GB (not included) or VIGI Cloud, with two-way audio, Active Defense (flashing white light and audible warning) and on-camera people and vehicle AI.

The housing is IP66 plastic (−30 to 60 °C) — weatherproof, but not the metal IP67 of the InSight turrets, and there is no IK vandal rating or external audio or alarm terminals.

It is ONVIF (Profile S), and a VIGI NVR can manage it locally.

§ 04Why choose this

Built for the way you actually use the VIGI C540-4G

Works anywhere on 4G

Insert a Nano-SIM and it runs over the mobile network — no fixed internet or cabling at the site.

Pan and tilt to cover more

Motorised 348° pan and 120° tilt with 300 presets and patrols, from the app.

Off-grid with solar

12 V DC or a VIGI solar kit runs it where there is no mains — no PoE needed.

Colour at night

Two white LEDs hold full colour to 30 m, or switch to infrared black-and-white.

Active Defense and audio

Flashing light, audible warning and two-way talk to deter and respond live.

Fewer false alerts

On-camera people and vehicle AI filters out animals, rain and shadows.

Records to card or cloud

microSD up to 512 GB or VIGI Cloud, in an IP66 weatherproof body.

§ 05Where it fits

Right at home in these scenarios

Remote and rural sites

Farms, paddocks, gates and sheds with no internet or network cabling.

Building and work sites

Temporary or changing sites where running cable is not practical.

Off-grid with solar

Spots with no mains power, paired with a VIGI solar kit.

Wide areas to cover

Yards and lots where pan and tilt beats a single fixed view.

Holiday & off-grid homes

Second properties, shacks and sheds with no mains or broadband, checked from your phone.

02

Installation Requirements

1. Connectivity: a Nano-SIM with a 4G data plan (your own); check there is good mobile signal at the mount. 2. Power: the included 12 V DC adapter, or a VIGI solar kit for off-grid sites. No PoE. 3. Recording: a microSD card up to 512 GB, or VIGI Cloud; a VIGI NVR can manage it locally. 4. Mounting: overhead, wall or pole; IP66 but no IK rating, so mount it out of easy reach in exposed spots.

§ 07Questions

Frequently asked about the VIGI C540-4G

Q.01

Does it need internet or a network cable at the camera?

No. It connects over the 4G mobile network using a Nano-SIM, so it suits remote sites with no fixed internet or cabling. You supply the SIM and a data plan — neither is included.
Q.02

How much mobile data does it use?

That depends on resolution, frame rate and how much motion it records. To keep data down, lower the stream resolution or frame rate, record on motion or people and vehicle events only, and store footage to the microSD card — viewing live or clips on demand rather than streaming all day.
Q.03

The camera will not come online — how do I tell if the SIM or 4G is the problem?

Watch the status light. Solid green means it is connected; blinking green means the SIM is not detected, so reseat the Nano-SIM; blinking red means mobile data is disabled or the plan has run out of data; and red and green together means it is still finding the network or the signal is weak. Check the SIM has active data and that there is good 4G signal where it is mounted.
Q.04

Can it run on solar?

Yes. It is 12 V DC and pairs with TP-Link's VIGI solar kits, for example the SP6030 or SP9030, so it can run fully off-grid. It also ships with a 12 V plug-pack for mains sites. It does not use PoE.
Q.05

Does it actually pan and tilt, or is that digital?

It physically moves: a motor pans up to 348° and tilts up to 120°, with 300 presets and patrol scan set from the VIGI app. The lens is a fixed 4 mm, so there is no optical zoom.
Q.06

Does it stay in colour at night?

Yes, using two white LEDs to about 30 m. You can switch it to infrared black-and-white instead, or set the light to auto, scheduled, always-on or off.
Q.07

Where does it record?

To a microSD card up to 512 GB (not included) or VIGI Cloud. A VIGI NVR can manage it locally, but a 4G camera is usually run from the app or cloud rather than wired into a PoE NVR.
Q.08

Is it as tough as the turret cameras?

It is IP66-rated for dust and rain, but the housing is plastic rather than the IP67 metal of the InSight turrets, and it has no IK vandal rating. Mount it out of easy reach on exposed or higher-risk sites.
Q.09

Does it have audio?

Yes, a built-in mic and speaker for two-way talk through the app, with the mic hearing to about 5 m. There are no external audio or alarm terminals, so it uses the built-in audio only.

§ 09Bundles

Recommended packages

02

Prefer a wired camera

Where you have power and network at the spot, the InSight S455 or S485 give higher resolution over PoE.

03

Don't forget a data SIM

It needs your own Nano-SIM and a 4G data plan to connect; these are not included in the box.
