What the 2012/24AUSI is
The Honeywell 2012/24AUSI sits between a household smoke alarm and a fire panel. It is a photoelectric smoke alarm for open-area protection with its own 85dB(A) sounder at 3 m, so it warns the people in the room first; and it is a four-wire, multi-voltage device with a change-over relay, so it can also tell a security or access control system that something is happening.
Interconnection is the reason it suits a larger building. Up to 24 alarms can be linked, so smoke detected in a hallway sounds every alarm in an apartment or a nursing home wing rather than only the one that saw it. Honeywell points at exactly those buildings: the low-voltage wiring is what makes it practical there.
It is built to be lived with. An 8 second alarm verification feature makes it look twice before sounding, the HUSH and test push button silences a cooking-smoke alarm without disabling it, and a custom easy-clean chamber keeps servicing simple. An automatic diagnostic test runs on its own, and a bi-colour green and red LED gives visual indication alongside the audible warning for a low battery or another fault.
It is not a fire panel and does not replace one: it is a smoke alarm with a relay, so what happens after that relay closes is up to the system it is wired into. When it does sound, it sounds like an evacuation. The alarm uses the temporal horn pattern of the ISO 8201 audible emergency evacuation signal, which is the three-beat pattern people are taught to recognise, rather than a plain continuous tone.
Electrically it is undemanding: 10 VDC to 30 VDC supply, 60 μA maximum average on standby, 65 mA maximum average in alarm, with a 9 VDC carbon zinc back-up battery supplied. The relay is 1 Form C rated 1A at 30 V DC or AC with normally-open and normally-closed change-over contacts. The housing is low profile in ceiling white at 55mm high and 135mm across, weighs 220 grams, and works from 0 to 50 degrees Celsius at 5% to 93% relative humidity. It is CSIRO certified and ActivFire listed to AS3786:2014.

A building where residents may not react quickly needs the alarm heard everywhere at once, and the ISO 8201 evacuation pattern is the signal staff and residents are trained on. The relay also lets the security system pass the event on.
Australian home with a security panel
Wired to a spare zone on a security panel, the relay passes the smoke alarm on to that system as well as sounding in the house. Set the zone as a 24-hour fire zone and turn off bypass for it, so it cannot be armed away.

What is in the box

Where to mount it
Fit it on the ceiling in the open area to be protected, using the supplied mounting ring. The housing is low profile at 55mm high and 135mm across in ceiling white, so it sits close to the surface.
Power and wiring
Feed it 10 VDC to 30 VDC over four-wire cable, typically from an alarm panel: two conductors for the supply and two for the relay, so one cable run reaches each alarm. It draws 60 μA maximum average on standby and 65 mA maximum average in alarm, so several units are a light load. No maximum run length is published for the alarm itself, so the limit is whatever the panel supplying it allows for a detector run.
Connecting to the panel
Use the 1 Form C relay, rated 1A at 30 V DC or AC, with its normally-open and normally-closed change-over contacts, wired to a spare panel zone with the end-of-line resistors that panel requires.
Interconnecting alarms
Up to 24 alarms in total can be interconnected so that one detection sounds them all, which needs one additional cable run between alarms on top of the run back to the panel. Plan that route, and the position of the panel supplying them, before fixing the first mounting ring: the panel belongs in a ventilated indoor spot central to the runs rather than at one far end.
Programming the zone
Set the zone as a fire or 24-hour type on the panel, and turn off the bypass option for it, since zones can be bypassed by default and a fire zone should not be.
When to call an electrician
The alarm runs on low voltage and needs no mains work, but any new or altered fixed mains wiring in the installation is work for a licensed electrician. Fire detection in a commercial building may also be subject to local requirements, so confirm the design with the responsible party.

Plan the cable before the first alarm goes up
