§ 01Overview

What the RF3405E is

The Bosch RF3405E is the transmitter for an opening that has to be watched two ways: not just opened, but attacked. The inertia sensor reacts to the shock of a frame being levered or a glass pane being struck, the reed switch reports the opening itself, and a third input takes a dry contact from something else entirely, so one wireless point can be set up for the job the opening actually needs.

Sensitivity is set for the opening rather than left to chance. Minor attack can be programmed to react after four or eight repetitive pulses, and gross attack has four sensitivity settings of its own; with gross attack enabled the inertia sensor reacts only to major attack movement, which suits a roller shutter that rattles in the wind. Separate test modes verify the gross and minor settings once the unit is mounted, so the setting is proven on the actual door instead of guessed.

It is flexible about what it watches, within one limit. The transmitter is set to monitor the inertia sensor or the external loop: it cannot monitor both at the same time. The reed switch can be enabled or disabled separately, and the internal reed switches will accept a dual end-of-line resistor supervised dry contact input from an external device.

Radio is 433.42 MHz at less than 10 mW, with an open-air range of about 300 m, though Bosch asks that the transmitter stay within 100 m of the receiver it is assigned to. Supervision is a signal every 13 minutes when nothing else has happened, cover and wall tampers both report, and every transmission carries the battery status. One 3 VDC lithium battery runs it for at least three years, or two years if the inertia sensor is in use.

Mounting is conventional: the transmitter on the door or window frame, the magnet assembly on the moving part. Two cautions apply. A metal surface may reduce the radio range, and iron or steel may affect the internal magnetic contact. The transmitter measures 2.7 cm x 2.4 cm x 16.9cm with a 1.9 cm x 1.3 cm x 16.9 cm magnet, and it works from -20C to +60C at up to 95% non-condensing humidity.
