Hikvision DS-TCG406-E 5MP Intelligent Entrance ANPR Camera — Motorised Varifocal, Built-in IR + White Light, 140dB WDR
- 5MP ANPR at up to 20m: 1/1.8″ CMOS sensor delivers 3072×1728 resolution at 30fps, resolving plate characters clearly at distances up to 20 metres with 140dB WDR preventing washout from direct headlights at gated entrances.
- Two Motorised Varifocal Lens Options: 2.8–12mm covers 114.5°–38.6° horizontally for closer or wider entrances; 8–32mm narrows to 47.2°–15.1° for longer lanes or overhead boom mounts. Both lenses are motorised for remote focus after installation.
- Dual Built-In Lighting: Four integrated LEDs — two warm white and two IR — deliver general scene illumination up to 50m and targeted plate capture up to 20m, eliminating the need for external illuminators at standard entrance points.
- Offline Allowlist and Blocklist With 100,000 Entries: On-board TF card slot supports up to 1TB, with local storage of 100,000 plate entries for allowlist and blocklist operation — the camera continues to control barrier access independently if the network goes down.

§ 01Overview
What the DS-TCG406-E is
Built specifically for vehicle entrance and exit control, the Hikvision DS-TCG406-E is a 5 MP intelligent ANPR camera that reads number plates accurately across a range of real-world conditions.
Equipped with a 1/1.8″ progressive scan CMOS sensor delivering resolutions up to 3072 × 1728, it captures clear plate data at up to 30 frames per second while simultaneously recording general scene video.
Two motorised varifocal lens variants are available: a 2.8–12 mm option for wider or closer-range entrances, and an 8–32 mm option for longer distances or overhead mounting positions.
Built-in dual lighting combines warm white and IR LEDs for round-the-clock illumination, with plate recognition effective up to 20 metres.
Intelligent triggering via video detection, induction loop, radar, Wiegand, or relay input makes the DS-TCG406-E compatible with a wide range of access control infrastructure.
On-board TF card storage and an offline allowlist and blocklist supporting 100,000 entries allow the camera to operate barrier control without relying on a live network connection.

§ 04Why choose this
Built for the way you actually use the DS-TCG406-E
Two Lens Variants Match Site Geometry
The choice of 2.8–12mm or 8–32mm motorised varifocal lenses allows the installer to match the camera precisely to the site geometry — wide-angle for close-in entrances, telephoto for overhead boom mounts or longer lanes — rather than accepting a fixed-angle compromise.
Offline Operation Keeps Barriers Working
On-board storage with offline allowlist capacity of 100,000 entries is not a feature found on general IP cameras. It addresses a genuine operational need: barrier gates that must continue working when a server is offline or a network switch fails.
Multi-Mode Triggering Integrates With Existing Hardware
Support for video motion, induction loop, radar, Wiegand, and relay input triggering means the camera connects to most existing access control infrastructure without requiring sites to replace loop detectors or control panels already in place.
§ 05Where it fits
Right at home in these scenarios
Managed Car Parks and Multi-Tenant Facilities
Plate-based allowlists stored on-board let residents and staff enter without tickets or fobs. With 100,000 list entries and TF card storage up to 1TB, the system scales to large facilities and operates independently of the car park management server.
Gated Residential Estates
Resident and visitor plates are stored locally, allowing the barrier to operate even if the site network is unavailable. The 2.8–12mm lens handles standard driveway-width entrances where vehicles stop close to the camera position.
Logistics and Freight Yards
The 8–32mm motorised varifocal lens reads plates at longer distances across wide gate openings or from elevated mounting positions, suited to freight depots where trucks approach along a long lane before reaching the boom gate.
Toll and Revenue Control Gates
The 140dB WDR prevents headlight washout during night-time capture, while vehicle attribute recognition (brand, model, colour) supplements plate data for dispute resolution and accurate vehicle logging across high-volume throughput lanes.
§ 06Setup
Installation & setup
Lens Selection by Site Geometry
If the camera is mounted within 3–8 metres of the barrier arm at a standard entry, the 2.8–12mm lens provides the wider field needed. For overhead boom mounts or positions 10–20 metres from the plate, the 8–32mm lens gives the required reach. Confirm camera-to-plate distance and mounting height before ordering as these are separate SKUs.
Power and Connectivity
The camera supports PoE (802.3at) or 12 VDC. Verify total PoE budget when adding multiple cameras to a shared switch. Use shielded Cat6 with surge protection for outdoor Ethernet runs and seal all conduit entry points to protect internal electronics.
Trigger Configuration
Wire the appropriate trigger input (induction loop, radar, Wiegand, or relay) to the camera terminal block. Configure the trigger mode and plate capture zone in the camera web interface, then test with a known plate under day and night conditions before commissioning.
Lead Time Planning
The DS-TCG406-E carries a 10-week lead time. For projects with a fixed commissioning date, order well in advance and confirm trigger compatibility with the site's existing access control hardware before the camera arrives on site to avoid delays at installation.
